I’M ABOUT TO GET DIVORCED – WHAT SHOULD I DO? Your spouse just told you that he or she wants a divorce. Or, you’ve finally reached the end of your rope and made the decision to divorce. Now that a divorce is imminent, what should you do? The first thing to do is to make sure you are familiar with your finances. Divorce is a financial dissolution, and you should know what you and your spouse have and where it is. Get copies of financial records, including tax returns and account statements. Secure your jewelry, collectibles or anything else of value before it “disappears.” Don’t run to the bank and take everything out. Your ex will get half, and you will lose credibility with the judge. If there are firearms in the home, it is a good idea to voucher them with the local police department. Keep cool. Avoid any type of physical altercation or anything that could lead to the issuance of an order of protection. It is OK to leave the house, unless custody is going to be an issue. Get a lawyer you trust, don’t hire anyone that you don’t. Finally, take care of yourself. Get a good therapist and see him or her regularly. Bad things can happen to good people. But you will get past it and be happy again. Back
